Hello everyone! Yesterday was a doozy. We had a long list of things that needed to get done, and on top of that a doctor's appointment and a trip to Target to get a new rocking chair (the chair is heaven but the drive to Target is over an hour for us). Needless to say we were stretched to full capacity. Then somewhere in the middle of all the craziness that is our life right now I realized that my blog was not working. I thought I would give it some time and it would come back to life. You know... like blogger was down or something? Hours later still nothing. I eventually realized, and a lot too late, that I had let my domain registration expire and would have to pay an exorbitant amount of money to get it back. After getting over the initial anger and frustration of that discovery I was then informed that I actually could not buy it back even if I wanted to because some one else already bought it. Yes, that's right! Someone had "janereactionblog.com" on back order. They were just waiting for me to get so distracted having a baby that I never saw the email notifying me that my registration was up, so they could swoop in and snatch it up. Who would have thought? I'm still trying to figure out how that happened. Well anyway, now if you go to the old blog site you will see some really nice Japanese characters and some flowers? Some one tell me how things like this happen?!

I decided to do what I wanted to do a few months ago - which is combine my blog and my design site into one. I have been hesitant to do this for many reasons but the main reason is because I didn't really want perspective clients to see so much of my personal life. I especially didn't want anyone to know that I had a baby because I have found that for some people that means you all of the sudden can't work as hard. But, I finally feel pretty confident that when people hire me they really are hiring ME! They want me to design something for them, not just some random girl in the middle of the pacific ocean. My clients often turn into friends and people that I stay in touch with long after the project is over. I have totally embraced the fact that I have a life aside from working and I love that my clients respect that. Hopelessly Addicted To Instagram - Impossibles Pizza Truck

We love stopping by the Impossibles Pizza truck, getting a huge slice of pizza and then it eating while watching the big waves on the North Shore. This was Henry's first time as Sunset Beach and I think he rather enjoyed himself.

2 Cent Tuesday #6: Staying Organized

I often get asked how I manage to remember everything. I have always been a tidy person and a list maker but when I started taking on multiple projects at once and trying to live my life and take care of a family I had to take it to a whole new level. I was constantly cleaning, checking my to do lists and buying more and more space saving containers. Now that there is a newborn in the mix I have had to throw some of this out of the window and not be so "type A" about things like making the bed every morning, doing the dishes as soon as they are put in the sink and getting projects done lightyears ahead of time. However there are three life saving tools in my work life that I simply cannot live without and that have actually helped me at this time when I have needed it the most. These are my tried and true organizational tools that also keep me motivated and inspired.

#1. TeuxDeux

TeuxDeux is my number one, hands down, most favorite organizational tool. It is an online to-do list that spans days and months and years. It was created by the genius designer Tina Roth Eisenberg behind the blog Swiss Miss - so you know it is beautiful. I saved this site as my homepage so that every time I open a new window it pops up and reminds me what is going on in the week. It also has an app for your iPhone.

#2. Filing

Present and Correct

On the first day in my graphic design program they taught us the importance of keeping your files organized. This is a skill that when mastered will make your work load seem a million tons lighter. It is also a skill that when neglected will leave you very unhappy, stressed and behind on your deadlines. Everyone needs to find their own method for doing this but here is mine - I have several main folders on my desktop. The left side of the monitor belongs to me and the right side belongs to my husband. God only knows what husband does with his side, I surely can't make sense of it. As for my side I have a column of folders labeled Pictures, Design Past, Blog, Personal and Etsy. Then I have a second column for my current projects. A folder for each project. When a project is complete I go through it, delete any unnecessary remaining files and throw it in the Design Past file. To stay on top of it there are files within files within files. It also helps to get a good labeling system down so when you go back to look for something you have an idea of what to type in your search bar. Labeling with dates is always helpful but I have found that very specific and descriptive labels are the most helpful for me.

#3. Pin Boards

These days Pinterest has made it really easy for us to spot something on the internet that inspires us, grab it and put it up on our own little digital pin board. But what about all of that great stuff that you find out in the real world? Business cards, maps, take-out menus, brochures? I used to have a drawer full of little envelopes and paper bags which were full of stickers, postcards, stamps, sketches, magazine clippings, notes from friends... and more. I swore one day I would use these things for something, or that I would be inspired by it somehow. The problem was it all got lost in the clutter and eventually thrown away. After I put it in that drawer I never saw it again. Then one day I got out the trusty old pin board and started hanging it up where I could see it. It changed my life. Of course I am a bit type A about this as well and everything has to be hung perfectly straight with a clear thumb tack (haha I really am a weirdo), but the organized mess that is my pin board helps me remember the things I found that week that truly inspired me and that I want to some how incorporate into a certain project.

I hope these little tips help. I know for me they sure made a world of difference. So, here's to a new year full of organization, happy little messes. This year I am going to learn to let go of that type A personality but cling to the few methods that save me from my madness.

This week the weather was a little dreary here in Hawaii so we decided to go explore the Buddhist Temple in Kaneohe. We had fun walking around the grounds and looking at all the little treasures in the gift shop. I also felt pretty good about the whole outing because it was one of the first days in a while that I have actually gotten myself completely ready for the day. Note the self portrait front and center?

Look For Less #5: MADEWELL

I have seriously loved putting these together. I love shopping but just don't have all of the money in the world so it is fun for me to find styles that I like and see how I can put it together using what I already have on hand plus maybe a little something new that doesn't break the bank. Also, isn't that braid in the top photo to die for? Wish my hair could do that!

I am excited to introduce to you today's guest blogger - my one and only sister. She is one of my best friends and has been such a great example to me of motherhood over the last five years (her oldest turned five this month). Today she is sharing some recipes she uses to feed herself while taking care of her little ones. My sister is HEALTHY! She runs, she bikes, she climbs and she recently took up CrossFit , needles to say her body blows my mind! Here is what she has to share with us -

I am only able to remember the weeks after my two babies were born in a blur. It all seems like one day chock full of super emotions. It was amazing and exhausting all at the same time. The second time around I managed to learn that taking care of myself was as important as taking care of the two little people depending on me night and day. To me rest, water and good food were key to my emotional and physical well being. They are also the things that help get the milk flowing. Here are a couple of good food snack ideas that are ideal for moms. These can be made ahead of time and pulled out of the fridge any time a nourishing boost is needed. These are whole food snack ideas full of complex carbs and protein. No simple carbs here.

Simple carbs which are plentiful in processed foods cause your blood sugar to spike and then crash leaving you sleepy (sleepier!). Some examples of simple carbs: bagel, sugary cereal, white bread, crackers, cookies etc. Complex carbs and protein paired together gives you longer lasting energy and helps you feel full longer because they take longer to digest. Also, they have not had their fiber stripped away aʼla simple carbs. And donʼt we love our fiber?! Some examples of complex carbs: whole grains (oats, quinoa etc.) veggies, fruit, etc.

Recipe no. 1 - Egg Cupcakes

I use whatever veggies I have on hand for these, though I always include the spinach.

Ingredients: 12-18 eggs

3-4 cups fresh spinach

1 red pepper

1/2 onion

1 small zucchini

salt and pepper to taste

Heat oven to 375. Put washed veggies in food processor and pulse until they are chopped into small pieces. Be careful not to liquify the spinach which will turn into green froth if prcessed too long. Crack your eggs into a large bowl and whisk until mixed well, add salt and pepper, then stir the veggies into the eggs. Grease a cupcake pan well, I use coconut oil but you can use whatever you have on hand. Use a 1/4 measuring cup to scoop egg mixture into the cupcake pan. Bake for 7-10 minutes, remove from oven and place on cooling rack.I serve these with a slice of avocado on top. You can store these in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Recipe No. 2 - Blackberry Almond Parfait

This one is so simple but delicious. This will make one serving but could easily be made bigger and split into multiple servings. The measurements are not super important but I have included them here just to make it easy.

1/2 cup plain greek yogurt (i like fage or the costco brand)

1/2 cup washed blackberries or any other fresh berry

12 almonds

mix and eat!

2 Cent Tuesday #5: Set Goals (New Years Resolutions)

No one gets anywhere in life (you can read also business, romance, relationships, etc.) without making a plan and setting some goals. Last year (2011) my friend Katie and I made a bagua map to start our year out. You start by dividing a square into 9 parts and then according to the categories in the bagua map set goals for the new year. Last year I didn't feel like sharing my goals as a lot of them were more personal. This year I feel like being a little less cryptic and sharing a goal or two with you. Each link is the images' source followed by my goal. (Note - I didn't really follow the map very well, I set my goals first and then made a map around that). You too can make a map for your new year, or your business, or your marriage and display it prominently where it can serve as a visual reminder to you throughout the year. I chose to display mine on my desktop so I can constantly remember to stay on task and what my real priorities are.

1. Spiritual - Read more. Read for fun, but also read scripture. Specifically read scriptures as a family.
2. Work - Continue to develop web site and share more projects on design site. This one is hard because it is so important to keep your design portfolio current but it is so hard to find the time! I have quite a few projects that I have completed but just haven't formatted for my design site.
3. Motherhood - Get baby on a sleep schedule. Before Henry came into the world I swore I wouldn't be one of those moms with a rigid schedule. I owned the book Baby Wise but didn't think twice about reading it. Now, I see how important it is for my sanity and for baby's good health that I get him on a good schedule. I have since read Baby Wise and have started Henry on a routine (I don't do the whole cry yourself to sleep thing though - that might work for some people but it hurts my ears and my heart). Anyway, so far it is working out GREAT!
4. Health - Eat better. Stop having a Chocolate Oreo shake before bed every night. Lose my baby weight and get back to where I was before I got pregnant. Work out. (I think I could make a whole map revolving around this one goal)
5. Marriage - Something about this image makes me want to run to Conor and hold him forever. I want to be more supportive. I think I'm pretty supportive but sometimes when things don't go according to "the plan" I get a little stressed out and shut down. I need to roll with the punches a bit better. Also, when Conor gets home everyday I want to stop what I am doing, look at him, say hello! and kiss him on the mouth. No more of this staring straight at the computer like a zombie and saying, "heeeyyy...."
6. Creative - Think longer and harder on my design work. Streamline designs and make them more cohesive. Don't worry if you don't know what I'm talking about here. I don't really know what I'm talking about. Basically, make my work better than it ever has been before. Don't settle for good.
7. Worry Less - worry less, worry less, worry less. I need to worry less.
8. Family - Have family night every Monday. Plan a simple activity to do with husband and baby. Turn everything and everyone else off and enjoy the two people I love the most.
9. Start Business - I am going to stay a bit vague on this one. I think I have a pretty good idea and I really want to develop it into something bigger but I'm not ready to share just yet. Hopefully someday soon!

Lately I am really into instagram. My username is erinjane85 - find me! It is THE single most entertaining thing I can do while nursing. I know, I know... everyone is sick of hearing about me nursing. But, that is my life these days. This week however, we did manage to go to the beach, watch daddy surf, eat sushi to celebrate the new year and baby turned 1 month old! Wow, the time went by so fast!!

Henry Fox: A Birth Story

It's taken me a long time to figure out how I want to write about the birth of my son. I'm still not sure I have it right. It was an extremely intense, personal and sacred experience and the mere relaying of details just doesn't do it justice. And I can't for the life of me figure out how I want to portray myself or the experience - so I am just going to write it as it happened. This is the story of how I brought our little baby in to this world as I remember it. No added drama, no sugar coating it. It was hard, painful and beautiful all at the same time.

Conor and I prepared for the birth of our son for months before he was born. Early on in the pregnancy we both decided that we wanted a natural child birth in a birthing center. We did our research, watched all of those baby birthing documentaries on Netflix that try to convince you giving birth in an open field is safer than with a doctor in a hospital, and attended a 4 hour birthing class once a week for two months. The birthing class was probably the most helpful thing we could have done to prepare us for every possible birthing scenario. When we were done with our class I felt confident in myself and my body.*

The day before Henry was born I drove an hour down to the hospital in Kailua to have a weekly check up. My midwife checked my cervix, stripped my membranes (because I was over due) and determined that I was dilated to a 3 and could probably go into labor that night or sometime before the end of the week. She asked if I wanted to schedule an appointment to be induced and I said I would rather wait it out and let it come naturally. I have heard that when giving birth with out an epidural the last thing you want to do is mess with pitocin. It supposedly makes your contractions come on stronger and faster than they would without. Before I was about to leave she decided to check the baby's movement and fluids just to make sure everything was alright. The baby's heart rate and movement looked great but my fluids were very low. After discussing it with my midwife we decided that any risks associated with being induced were not as great as the risk of low fluid levels. She told me I could come back any time that evening to have my baby. I was excited and nervous and couldn't wait to tell Conor that we were about to become parents.

As I walked out of the hospital I called Conor on the phone and asked him if he wanted to become a daddy that night. He said of course! As I drove back up the coast to our home Conor busied himself by packing us some lunch and our hospital bags. I remember that drive very well. I turned the radio off and sang out load to myself the whole way home. Everything looked so beautiful. I was so excited! I remember noticing things about the island that I had never noticed in all of my years living here. The sun was bright and the water was so blue. It was amazing. I was about to become a mother!

We got to the hospital around 3 pm and I got hooked up to the pitocin and settled in to my bed. Conor and I watched some TV and played scrabble. The contractions started coming right away but I did not become uncomfortable for hours. I spent time walking and bouncing on the birthing ball. I remember thinking, either this birthing stuff isn't as painful as everyone makes it out to be or I am just really good at this. My dear friend and nurse Bethany kept telling me, "You still look too comfortable, we better kick up the pit a little bit more." Finally around 8 I started to feel the pain, but I apparently still looked "too comfortable" and kept getting my pitocin bumped up. I decided that maybe it was time to act a little more put out. Apparently I'm not a very good actor because I got the pit bumped up a few more times. Around 10 it finally became pretty unbearable and I decided it was time to get in the whirl pool. I stayed in there for what seemed like forever. Conor sat next to me and let me squeeze his hand with every contraction and told me how good I was doing and that he loved me so much. The contractions finally became so painful that I threw up. I had to get out of the whirl pool... I was shaking uncontrollably. I warmed up and got the pain back under control and crawled back in the bath.

This is about the time I became a zombie. I remember falling asleep in between contractions. Like I mean dead asleep. I was exhausted. It is the strangest feeling to wake up every other minute in a warm bath to the most intense pain and then fall completely asleep again. Every time I woke up I was just a little confused at what was going on. I don't really remember how long all of these different stages lasted but it felt like this went on for hours. Finally I had had enough. I looked Conor square in the eye and told him I couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't remember the word "drugs" or "epidural" so I calmly but firmly told him to "Go get me the medicines now." I remember him looking like he was about to laugh which only made me more serious and insistent. He told me it was too late, that I was already there, all I needed to do was push him out. I told him he was a liar and then I started to beg. I remember saying "Puuuuhhh-leeeeeeeeeezzzzz!!!" I could hear the awkward way I was breaking the word "please" in to two long syllables and recognized my little girl voice - I sounded exactly like I did when I was 5 and wasn't getting what I wanted. I felt sorry for my little girl self and thought about crying.

Then something in my mind snapped. It occurred to me suddenly that if I didn't get out of that tub soon I wouldn't be able to get myself out at all. I gathered every last bit of strength that I had, walked myself over to the bed and resolved to get that baby out. Bethany checked me and told me I could start pushing. I pushed as hard as I thought I could. Apparently it wasn't enough. I had to push harder and curl my body around the pain. I remember with every push I closed my eyes tight and saw white lightning pain shooting through my head. It was both insanely uncomfortable and amazing at the same time. I pushed for about 30 minutes. On the last push my midwife told me to stop pushing mid push. Apparently I figured out how to push harder than they had anticipated. Baby Henry came rushing out despite my effort to hold back. I tore quite a bit which was not part of my birth plan (but luckily that's the worst thing that happened during the whole delivery).

Henry was immediately placed on my chest. I cried. I cried because I was tired, and because I was hurt. And then I cried because I was so in love with this warm little body and dark little eyes just staring up at me in wonder. We just looked at each other, me and him. Conor cut the chord (which we have pictures of but will keep private because someone unwittingly displayed her vagina very clearly in the background). I held Henry for a little over an hour while the nurses finished up and took his vitals. Conor and I just stared at him the whole time. They took him from me to do some last little tests and to clean him up. I took and shower and got ready for bed. Then the three of us snuggled down into my bed and fell asleep as a family.

In the days that followed I couldn't believe what I had done. I was both proud of myself and scared of my strength. It still baffles me that I just walked myself in to that birthing center, laid myself down on that bed, endured everything that I did and then walked myself right out. Our bodies are truly amazing and I am a lot stronger than I think. I also feel very blessed that the delivery went as smoothly and as quickly as it did.

*Note - In hindsight I feel that I was way more prepared for labor and delivery than actually taking care of a baby. If I could go back and do anything over again I would have taken more classes on nursing and infant care - just a thought for anyone who is preparing for birth. After a month of being a mommy I would say labor and delivery was definitely the easiest part. Do not be afraid of it. Prepare for it, but do not be afraid.

Hello everyone! I planned on posting this Wednesday morning but it seems that some maintenance work will be done on our building (for the 3rd time this week) and we will have no power for at least 6 hours in the morning! Lovely! So, I am posting Tuesday night instead. Anyway, as you can probably guess I am really in to being a mom right now... which means my blog is really into motherhood as well. You can expect more "mommy" posts to be popping up on my blog from now on. I do hope to get back in to my little routine of "2 cent Tuesdays" and "Look for Less" but I am still getting the hang of being a first time mom. So I thought I would ask friend Brit Mann (lovely girl and talented photographer) to share her favorite baby products with us. Here are her tried and true recommendations:

Its important to me that baby products are as natural yet effective as possible, designed well (I'm a photographer and can't help but think about how things will look in photos), and affordable. These are my tried and true favorites.

1. These diapers are biodegradable, free of everything yucky (Juniper had a terrible doctor-diagnosed chemical burn from Pampers SENSITIVE diapers when she was a newborn!), the BEST for not leeking or having blowouts (I've even had non-hippy friends agree), and are by far the best designed diapers out there. I love that there are never any tacky cartoon characters on my baby's butt when I take photos of her running around half naked!

2. I did a comparison between all of the chlorine/dye/fragrance free wipes and these were by far the best. They are so moist and yummy smelling and one of the most affordable. Every time one of my friends borrow a wipe they want to switch over. Tip: save a couple refillable hard plastic Huggies wipes cases to fill with your Earths Best wipes because the EB basically come in plastic baggies.

3. Boudreaux's ALL NATURAL Butt Paste - My pediatrician recommended this diaper cream and after comparing some other natural brands, I decided this was my favorite.

4. Episencial Sunscreen This is one of the few sunscreens that are safe to use on babies less than 6 months old.

5. When Juniper was a couple weeks old I bought more of these so I could have one for each day of the week. They are essential. Easily my favorite baby product and the first thing I recommend when people ask what should they buy for a baby shower. The bamboo muslin is the softest but they are all wonderful.

6. Puj Tub - We live in a tiny apartment by the beach and we don't have any room for a big plastic baby tub, so we bought this because it hangs flat behind our bathroom door. We always made the bathroom nice and steamy and then plugged the sink to make a nice warm bath for baby. We used it right up until the time she was big enough to bathe in the normal bathroom tub.

7. Mustela newborn shampoo - This is the best thing for cradle cap and it smells like heaven.

8. Gerber organic onesies - Although we don't (can't) buy everything organic, these onesies are definitely worth it. They are so much softer and nicer quality than other onesies, and when babies are too little to go out much its kind of nice to just let them hang out in comfy onesies instead of elaborate uncomfortable outfits. The sizes are ridiculous though. Don't buy the newborn unless you have a preemie, usually its best to buy a size or two bigger.

9. Having a playmat that isn't ugly is important since baby is going to do lots of tummy time and its going to sit out on your floor a lot.

10. Cute drying rack for the kitchen counter

11. Bumbo or Bebe Pod in a neutral color so you can use it for your next child regardless of their gender.

Other things we loved: our Bugaboo stroller with the bassinet attachment, our Moby Wrap baby carrier, a good changing table station, a comfy rocking chair (one thats big enough for daddy to feel comfortable), a co-sleeper, a sound machine and good baby monitor

We have been having a heck of a time navigating the deep waters of new parenthood. A few nights ago we were up all night long (from midnight until 5). I kept thinking about that new show on TV right now called Up All Night - it is a big lie. That show is about a perfect family with lots of money and a baby that sleeps all night long. They don't even begin to cover the topic of sleep deprivation... sorry, tangent. Anyway, in the morning we decided to walk to Hukilau Cafe and order everything on the menu that sounded good just to reward ourselves for all the hard work we put in. We are also finding that we love this new journey we are on. Especially in those moments when Henry falls asleep on one of our chests, or laughs at something he dreamed up in his little noggin. We are so looking forward to Christmas morning when we can shower him with all of the presents we have made and bought for him. Merry Christmas everyone, we hope your holidays are warm and bright. 10 Merry Things

When you have a new baby in your home things slow way down. I mean, I knew they were going to, but I really had no idea. I literally didn't step one foot out of my home all weekend. Somedays are better than others. Somedays are a challenge. It's actually kinda nice to experience the holidays like this- getting to know my new baby and learning what real love and sacrifice for another person truly feels like. The slowness of it all gives me time to take in the really special moments. Here's a list of 10 of the merriest things going on right now -

1. Conor's parents were in town and helped me and baby tremendously! I don't know how I could ever tell his mom in words how much her help meant to me!

2. The other day I was kissing on Henry's cheek and he smiled and giggled. I know it seems early... newborn babies don't really smile and laugh at things but I swear he did. And boy did it melt my heart.

3. We have been brought meals in our home almost every night since we got home from the hospital. We even received an exceptional Sunday brunch - french toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and orange juice. It was a real treat.

4. Henry is healthy! This is something that I worry about constantly. You could definitely call me a germ-o-phobe. I thank heaven every night that he is healthy.

5. My parents are coming to town TONIGHT! They are flying here as I type this and it makes me want to shout for joy!

6. Walking past campus at night in shorts and a t-shirt and seeing all of the Christmas lights. Mele Kalikimaka! I love warm weather at Christmas.

7. Our beautiful friend Bethany (who was our labor and delivery nurse the night Henry was born) comes and visits me in my home to help me with nursing. I didn't know nursing was going to be one of the biggest challenges of my life and so far I think Bethany has saved my life (or at least my sanity) 50 million times.

8. My husband is superhuman. Yes, he is definitely learning how to be a new dad but he is so helpful and calming when I think I just can't do it anymore.

9. Wrapping Christmas presents! I love wrapping. I love it.

10. We have been watching old episodes of the TV show Cheers. The other night baby was sitting peacefully in his bouncer while Conor and I danced around him singing along to the theme song "Making your way in the world today takes everything you got. Taking a break from all your worries should would help a lot.... You wanna go where everybody knows your name!" The moment was so sweet I thought my heart would burst.

These last few days have been full of a lot of firsts for us. There are the cute firsts like baby's first sneeze, and baby's first doctor's appointment and baby meeting gramma and grandpa for the first time. Then there are the firsts that just make you want to laugh and cry at the same time. Like for example wiping poop in your own hair. Or baby's first bath - I'm sure we traumatized him with that one. Or getting to the point where you are sure you are going to run out of your house in your meshy maternity underwear because you just don't think you can handle being so responsible for something so precious. The firsts are coming and going so fast I can't keep track. Tomorrow early morning Henry will be a week old, and while everyday that goes by my life gets exponentially easier I wish I could slow it all down to a halt and hold him in my arms forever.

Henry Fox Riley was born December 1st at 3:12 AM. 9 lbs. 2 oz. 20 inches long. Remember how I said I was going to the doctor's on Wednesday... well they told me I could have a baby that night so I did. I will have to share the birth story later, for now we are getting to know our new best friend. Being a new mom is both the best and the scariest thing that has ever happened to me. I am so overwhelmed with love for this little person.

Hopefully this is the last of this sort of picture you will be seeing for a while. I am officially 5 days overdue and feeling like this whole pregnancy thing was just a big joke. My brain is really trying to come to terms with the fact that I just might look like this for the rest of my life. Stop it brain! Anyway, just wanted to say NO baby here YET! But hopefully soon! We are praying that I can go into labor naturally and not need to be induced. We really want the delivery to be as natural as possible. Last night we had a small get together with friends to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. Today we are getting together with more friends to continue the celebration. This Thanksgiving I am grateful for a lot of things, mostly my friends and my family. I am so thankful for two loving parents who showed me what it means to love and support a family (and laugh all the way to Idaho). I'm thankful for a sister who is always a phone call away and for her quick wit and humor that makes her so easy to love. I'm thankful for those 4 crazy girls (Janelle, Jennilee, Karly, and Ashley) who were with me in my prime of life. I am still so thankful for those wild days of jumping off cliffs, dancing till we dropped and talking all through the night. I am thankful for the new friends I have made in the past year that have made living so far away from home seem much easier. Today, I am especially thankful for my adorable husband who picks me up when I'm down and makes everything better when nothing seems to be going right. I'm thankful for the way he forgives me easily, makes me feel like the coolest kid on the block and can make me laugh with just one funny look. He is truly the best friend I could have ever asked for. I am so thankful for the little chicken nugget that is about to make his debut into the world. Yesterday was actually my due date and we were hoping he would be here by now. But, we are thankful to know that everyday is a day closer to meeting him... because we are so ready.

And there's a little peek into my after party... totally exhausted. This is me about the beg my husband to pick me up and carry me to my bed because I am too tired to walk. I have to take my hat off to the man - he cooked, cleaned and even made that cute little streamer hanging on our wall. SO glad to have him around.

2 Cent Tuesday #4: Typography

My favorite thing in the world (well, in the design world) would have to be typography. I don’t know why I love it, it’s just one of those things. When type is beautiful and laid out just so – it makes my heart sing. Conversely, when fonts are just terrible and the layout was never taken into consideration I want to die. Dramatic? Maybe. But, it’s the honest truth. I also love it because I feel like it is a skill I can constantly improve on. If you're just starting out in the design world here are 5 quick typography tips to make your designs more wonderful!

No. 1 LEARN THE BASICS (image source)
Before you can really appreciate great typography and layout you need to understand what makes great typography great. Become familiar with certain type styles: serif, sans serif, script, hand drawn, etc. If you would really like to read up on the subject visit I love Typography and read Paul Dean’s eXtreme Type Terminology column. It is loaded with great information about typography, the history behind type faces and type setting.

No. 2 ESTABLISH A HIERARCHY AND A GRID (image source)
Hierarchy refers to where you want the reader to start reading and how they should proceed. Your header or title does not always need to be located at the upper left hand corner. With a well-defined hierarchy the reader’s eyes will be drawn to the most important information first. Using size and type faces to establish a hierarchy is important. It is also important to stick to a grid. When doing this don’t let the length of your paragraph line be so long that the paragraphs become difficult to read. On the other hand don’t let line length be so short that the eye can’t stay focused.

No. 3 DON'T OVERWHELM YOUR DESIGN WITH TOO MANY FONTS (image source)
A good rule of thumb is to use around 3 to 4 fonts. Keeping your fonts consistent throughout your layout will help you establish your hierarchy and provide balance. Ever wonder what font is being used in a certain layout? Fonts In Use is a great site to look at to get some typography ideas AND it tells you what font is being used where.

No. 4 AVOID USING DECORATIVE FONTS IN YOUR BODY COPY (image source)
Decorative type faces should be used as accents or headers in your design. Script type, hand drawn type, overly complicated type - should not be used in a paragraph! Ever. When laying out a web site or an editorial piece information is key. Allow your reader to actually read it.

No. 5 PAIR FONTS TOGETHER WISELY (image source)
Thoughtfully pair serif, sans serif and scripted type faces together. Using different fonts to compliment each other is an art. It also gives your design more depth and interest. Avoid pairing two fonts that are very similar to each other, this will just look like a sloppy mistake.

The Waiting Game (with Mr. Goat and Lady Rabbit)

It was about this time of year, two years ago, that I was playing this same waiting game. A friend of mine gave me a certain boy's phone number with the simple promise that he was "the one" for me. Of course that boy was Conor. He lived in California and I lived in Portland. I knew there was a chance she could be wrong but I sent him a text anyway. He sent one back. Soon enough we started sending random text messages daily. I remember getting a stupid grin on my face every time my phone would light up. This went on for months. It was exciting to get to know someone without ever meeting them in person or talking to them on the phone. I started to fall for my "text messaging boyfriend" as the people around me soon started to call him. It felt like a huge mysterious secret and I loved it! One night in November we finally talked on the phone. It was weird to hear his voice for the first time. This person I knew so much about didn't have a voice until then. We confessed in that conversation that we really liked each other and decided we should probably meet in person.

That night I wrote Conor a letter in my journal:

Dear Conor,

You are coming to my house to meet me for the first time in 10 days. I am so nervous to meet you. I am writing you this love letter to tell you how much I loved you before I ever even met you. So someday, if we get married, you can read this letter to our kids or grandkids. Conor, I loved you after the first text message you sent me. I looked forward to every message from then on. Even at three in the morning your messages would make me laugh out loud. When I accidentally wrote "mits you" and you responded "gloves you" I knew you were meant for me. Tonight when we talked on the phone about our families and church and how our day went I felt like we had been friends forever. I seriously can't wait to meet you. I know so much about you already. You hate eggs and onions, you love dancing and being silly, you work hard and love to spend time with your family. But I don't know how your mouth moves when you speak or what you do when you get nervous. I'm looking forward to finding these things out. I love you Conor. Love Jane

Conor came to Portland a few days earlier than we had planned to surprise me. I remember the night he walked up the steps of my front porch and I saw my husband for the first time. I remember shaking. Literally. I was so nervous and excited and in love I couldn't hold still. It was freezing outside and he had a thin denim jacket on. I immediately took him into my arms and well... you know how the story ends. Later in my journal I wrote, "Conor does a funny little dance when he can't think of anything to say. He pops his thumb knuckles constantly - even in his sleep. He's very good at finding his way around and it seems like he can't get lost. He thinks I am very funny and tells me I am beautiful. I love kissing him."

The anticipation I have about meeting our son for the first time in a few short days far exceeds that feeling I had two years ago. I am so much more in love with him and even more with Conor than I could have imagined back then. I feel like I already know this sweet spirit so well. We have been secretly communicating for months - just me and him. His little kicks make me laugh and I have started to be able to anticipate when he will get restless. But, I know there is so much more to discover, so much I don't know. Like how his little mouth will move when he starts to speak or what he will do when he gets scared. I am so looking forward to finding these little things out. I hope he is like his daddy and comes a few days early. But if not, I will continue to patiently play this waiting game because I know it is worth it.

Baby, We are so ready to meet you. We love you so much already and can't wait to love you more. Please come soon. We have all the things that you could possibly need and so much love to give you. Love mom and dad

2 Cent Tuesday #3: Beautify your Blog

I’ve never really considered myself a blogger. I think I am a graphic designer who has a little blog on the side. However, I think I have been around the blogging block enough times to give some advice on beautifying your blog. This advice is for anyone starting a blog, whether it’s about photography, design, or just a personal journal. These are some simple things you can do yourself to improve the look and feel of your blog before seeking out professional help.

#1. FIND A UNIQUE, CLEAN, EASY TO NAVIGATE TEMPLATE ONLINE
The first thing I notice when looking at a new blog is the layout. Blogs that look clean and easy to navigate are always going to be more appealing. Blogs that look like the generic blogger template that everyone else has or have been freakishly overloaded with graphics, colors and buttons are going to lose me fast. You can find some pretty sweet blog layouts on the internet for free. One really great source out there is Pugly Pixel (responsible for layout featured in photo above). If you don’t know about this site already you seriously have to check this girl out – she has tons of cool downloads and tutorials for fancying up your blog, half of which are free!! Find something out there that is as close to what you want your blog to look like and then customize it.

#2. CUSTOMIZE YOUR BLOG TO FIT YOUR NEEDS AND STYLE
In order to customize your layout you might need to do a little digging into the CSS and HTML behind your template. Does this intimidate you? Don’t let it. There are thousands of tutorials and step by step instructions out there on how to adjust certain elements of your blog. You just have to be willing to search for them. When I started blogging on a regular basis I realized that most of the blogs that drew me in had wider pictures that were consistently the same width. I asked around about how these bloggers were able to do this and then I Googled it. Between the helpful advice and the online tutorials I was able to come up with my current solution: I upload all photos and images through Flickr by copying and pasting the share code into my posts. This allows me to archive all of my blog’s content while presenting wide, clear photos that are consistently 640 pixels wide. Look at the blogs you love to read and ask yourself what some of the common visual elements are. For web design inspiration I often go to Siteinspire.com. This site has a massive library of beautifully designed blogs and websites of every kind.

#3. ADHERE TO SOME SIMPLE DESIGN GUIDELINES WHEN CUSTOMIZING YOUR BLOG.
The following are just guidelines not hard and fast rules that can’t be broken. And remember that in the design world rules are made to be broken - you just need to know them in order to know why you are breaking them.
No. 1 – Keep your blog a manageable width. Your overall width should be somewhere between 900 and 1200 pixels. Blogs that are too wide often become very difficult to fill with clean, neatly laid out content. Blogs that are too narrow will limit your ability to present large beautiful photos.
No. 2 – Your blog should stick to a strict 2 or 3 column setup. Most blogs use a 2-column setup with the main column taking up 2/3rds of the space and the sidebar taking up the remaining 1/3rd. The rule of thirds can be your best friend.
No. 3 – If your photos are vertically oriented - pair them together in order to fill your entire content width. Nothing allows your eyes to focus more clearly on content than nice straight clean lines up and down the page.
No. 4 – Left align your text and allow it to fill your content bar. Unless you are writing poetry or a grocery list your blog should probably read like a book or a newspaper column. The human eye will thank you for doing it this favor.

No. 5 - Only blog your best work/photos/ideas. People will know when you are just filling your blog with meaningless content and they will lose interest fast. Contrary to popular belief it is OK to take a break from blogging every once in a while to ensure quality content. Just make sure your readers know you will be back with more of what they want to see.

Spent the weekend at the beach. Boys surfed while girls ate ice cream pie in the sun. I ventured into the ocean only to find that my body doesn't work the way it used to. I can't dodge big waves like a normal person... needless to say I ended up awkwardly sprawled out with limbs in the air. Lovely. Also humiliating - the urge to pee and not being able to get all the way in the water. This leaves me with no choice but to let it run down my leg. "La la la nothing to see here... just peeing my pants, I promise I'll wash it off later." Too much info? Sorry.

Solo Corp Logo + A peek into my design process

So I decided mid-summer I would officially take my maternity leave starting November 2. I thought planning this out in advance would be best so that I wasn't tempted to work right up until my due date just in case baby came early. Well, baby didn't come early and a quickie project presented itself to me this last week and I just had to take it! Time moves so slow when waiting for a little one to arrive and I needed a project to distract me from thinking about how many more minutes might have to pass before I can hold my little boy in my arms. I can't think of any other situation on earth that can make a grown woman look at her calendar 10 million times a day only to think that if she just looks at it one more time something might have changed. Bla bla bla, enough about babies, right? Anyway, back to the point - I took on a quick logo project which I am going to share with you now and explain a little bit about my design process.

This client contacted me about designing a logo for her and her husband's construction company. After talking things over on the phone I usually ask clients to make an inspiration board or pin things on Pinterest to give me an idea of what they are looking for. I was genuinely nervous to see what some one would pin for a construction company logo - I thought it might be stiff and boring. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a peek at her board and saw the above images (sorry there are no photo credits - I just literally dragged them off of her pin board). I could have kissed her! She also mentioned that her and her husband really like the idea of an "S" for Solo Corp made into the shape of a house to symbolize construction.

I presented her with two concepts based on her verbal direction and visual inspiration. Of course there was more than what is shown above - this is just a sneak peek. She ended up liking a combination of the two. It has been my experience that everyone does this, and I usually encourage it. I know that I am not going to nail exactly what they are looking for in one concept so I usually let clients know it is ok to tell me what they like and what they don't like. Together we can eliminate what is wrong and fill in what is missing. After going over the concepts together this is what we came up with: I am actually super excited about how it turned out - I really didn't think I would love creating a logo for a construction company but I really did. Now, I just need to take my own advice from my last "Two Cent Tuesday" and take it to the next level "just because I want to". Can you imagine what fun things could be created from this design? Business cards, letterheads, t-shirts for the crew... etc?! I will definitely have to share some of my projects that I have been working on "just because I want to" at a later time. But for now ladies and gentlemen I am off to enjoy a baby shower!! YAAAAY!

2 Cent Tuesday #2: Do a project just for you.

Welcome to today’s 2 Cent Tuesday (on Wednesday)! Last weeks 2 cents was a little wordy so I am going to try to keep this one shorter and to the point. The topic is - do a project just because you want to. Period. In my opinion one of the best ways to stay inspired, keep yourself busy and make your portfolio (online or print) look amazing is to do work that you love. Work you love also tends to be work you are really good at. If it's not than doing more of it just for the heck of it is only going to make you better.

So, what kinds of projects should you be working on? Well, what kind of work do you want to get? Show projects in your portfolio that reflect the type of work you dream of doing. When I first started putting together my print portfolio I got some really great advice – design the heck out of everything. If you have designed a really great logo for a client and you can clearly see the potential for there to be so much more then don't stop! Do it just for fun, just to make your portfolio that much more amazing! Here are 5 ideas to get you started on a project just for you.

#1. Go to your favorite restaurant, ask for their “to go” menu and re-design everything. Make them a better logo, a better menu, and an amazing add that they could run in their local paper. Get some great inspiration from sites like The Art of the Menu - photo above taken from this site.

#2. Design a “leave behind”. Imagine you just got an interview at the place you have been dying to work for as long as you can remember. You are going to show them your work, you are going to smile and be as charming as possible. But, what is going to make them remember you long after you are gone? Design something that says something about who you are as a designer that you can leave with them. Photo above via Laura Berglund.

#3. Dying to get more editorial projects? Team up with a great photographer and design several layouts for a magazine. It can be a magazine that already exists or one that you just made up. Get some great inspiration from Uppercase Magazine.

#4. Brand yourself. Do you think that branding is where it’s at? Do you yourself have a brand identity? Take time to go through the whole branding process with yourself. Design everything – business cards, portfolio, invoices, letterhead, etc. I know a couple of designers who actually do this every year at the beginning of the year just for good practice.

#5. Would you like to do more packaging design? Think of a product that you know you buy just for the packaging. I know when I walk down the cleaning isle at Target I have a very hard time making up my mind about what to buy because so many of the bottles are beautifully designed. Baby's Quiet Book

Our weekend was pretty low key. Conor surfed while I drank smoothies and slept by the pool. I finished the quiet book I have been making for baby (click through to see more pages). We also went to food fest! My favorite event put on by the university every semester. I got falafel from the Arab club and Conor got Yakitori from the Japanese club. I get so excited when Conor tells me it's time for food fest I almost throw up!

Type A Press: Brand Refresh and Web Design

I recently had the opportunity to work with Chelsey Nichol of Type A Press located in McMinnville Oregon. Chelsey owns and runs a letterpress print shop in historical down town McMinnville. She loves all things nautical and wanted to incorporate and anchor and a ship into her branding. Chelsey chose the color scheme and left the rest up to me. I loved all of the history behind her little shop so I tried to keep her branding looking simple and classic while giving it a modern spin.

For the website and blog I first came up with something more typical and simple - large rotating photos with a white background. Chelsey really wanted to incorporate more of the graphic elements of her brand so we went back to the drawing board and came up with something more lighthearted and playful. I really like the way it turned out. I also really like that Chelsey will be printing my personal business cards SOON!! Yay! Can't wait to hold them in my hands. 2 Cent Tuesday #1: Rates and Invoices

Welcome to today’s 2 cent Tuesday. I realize for most of you it is already Wednesday... but it is Tuesday here and I am still in full swing! Today's topic: How much should I charge and how do I explain my prices to my clients?

HOW MUCH SHOULD I CHARGE?

First of all, let’s start at the start. All freelance graphic designers charged little to nothing when they first got started. This directly reflected where they were as a designer – at the bottom. The first real job I took on while still in college was designing a wedding invitation. I designed, printed and assembled every invitation myself. Then I hand carved a linoleum stamp and personally inked and printed every individual enclosure. For hours upon hours upon hours of tedious work I charged $50. And when I was done I felt guilty asking for the check. HAHA! That makes me laugh today. But, I, like everyone else out there had to start somewhere.

Luckily for me the couple that I designed the invitations for were very grateful, so fun to work with and completely supportive of my creative ability. Also luckily for me not everyone I worked with after that was. I say luckily because this is how I learned to charge what I am worth. After that first great experience I kept charging almost nothing but I started to notice that some clients weren't always fun to work with. They started to ask for a million and one revisions. They wanted to see something just because they were curious about how it would look, not because they really wanted to use it. I actually had a client ask me to teach them how to do something so they could do it themselves (this last one really fried me). It got to the point where I felt abused and taken advantage of. I started to really hate what I was doing. When you undercharge for your services, and fail to communicate your expectations up front people WILL take advantage of you. Whether they mean to or not. And when you feel like you are being taken advantage of you start to resent your client, your work and then your life. So let go of your insecurities and the mindset that you aren't that good yet and start charging what you are worth.

My strategy for determining how much I should charge for my services is simple. I take into consideration two things. Number one – what is the average going rate for someone out there doing the work I am doing? And number two - what is my time worth to me? When I say “my time” I mean time with my husband, time taking care of myself, time with my soon to be new baby boy, etc. What is the price I need to be paid in order to feel good about giving up “my time?" Every time someone presents me with a project I ask myself these two questions. How Design has a great breakdown of Graphic Designer’s Hourly Rates. If after looking at that you are still unsure (or you are in another field of freelance) I strongly suggest you do some research into what the average going rate for some one like you should be. As far as how much your time is worth - well, that is not something you can Google. But trust me, at some point you have got to come up with a price that makes giving up “your time” worth it or you will be terribly unhappy when your client deviates from the project’s original path (and they will 90% of the time).

So, take a good look at your skills, remind yourself that your clients are coming to you because they cannot do this work themselves and you are worth every penny you are about to charge them. Then you should probably go ahead and add 10% to your price just for good measure. I know a lot of you are still undercharging. Of course we all have to start somewhere to gain experience but when you start to think that your client is a pain in your side you maybe just need to re-evaluate what you are charging and how you are communicating the terms of your services. It might be you, not them, with the problem. 99.9% of the time that I have done my part communicating my value and my expectations up front I have worked with amazing clients. Which brings us right to our next question.

HOW DO I EXPLAIN MY PRICES TO MY CLIENTS AND BILL THEM ACCORDINGLY?

You give them an invoice outlining everything in detail! After discussing the details of a project with a client I determine the total cost and write up an invoice. In my invoice I am very specific about the project timeline, the amount of revisions the client will be allotted, when they are expected to pay me, how they should pay and what they will be charged if they request any additional revisions. I also let them know what I will charge for every day that their payment is late. I go ahead and let the client know right away that I expect half up front before I even touch their project. I outline all of these things for every single project. No matter what. And because things seem to fall through the cracks sometimes I don't just stop there. I reiterate everything in an email. Later, when things start to deviate from the original course I refer my client back to these two documents and let them know that I was not originally commissioned for the task they are requesting but that I would be happy to do it for the previously mentioned agreed upon price. When a project takes longer than it should I refer my client back to the invoice and remind them politely that we are on a schedule. This system has worked very well for me. The only time it has failed is when I have failed to provide them with an invoice at the very beginning.

Don't know what to include in your invoice? Check outSmashing Magazine, they have a great article with tips and examples on how to invoice like a pro. Don't know where to start when designing your invoice? Adobe offers free Illustrator templates that allow you to customize an invoice for your business. My invoice is loosely based off of this design - it is clean, easy to read and looks professional. If you do not currently send and invoice at the beginning of every project start now. Send one for every project - big or small. It doesn't matter if the client is your 5-year-old niece requesting you design her birthday invitation, you should get in the habit of sending an invoice every time. I guess that last example was a little extreme but writing and sending and invoice every time will save you tears and frustration many times over.

Happy Halloween everyone! Conor and I went to the annual Halloween Surf Competition at Castles Beach on Saturday. It was fun to see everyone's costumes. Then we spent the afternoon hunting a ginormous jelly fish the size of a basketball! Swimming around in near proximity to that creature was far scarier than the haunted lagoon we went to this weekend. On a different note - I have been having some painful contractions and the other day they started coming at regular intervals. We are trying to convince baby to come out sooner rather than later. Next week sometime would be nice, thank you.

I wish I could participate in this fall weather that everyone is experiencing. Alas, I am very pregnant and living in a tropical climate. Clothes like these can only be a dream. For now I wear as little as possible and sit with a fan three inches away from me (literally). Maybe I could wear the tunic and NOTHING else. Maybe.

I will however be making myself a pair of tights like these (see below)! I don't care how hot it is. I have been searching the internet for somewhere to order this style but I have not had any luck. Sharing My 2 Cents

I have wanted to write a regular post on this blog about what I have learned as a freelance graphic designer for sometime now. I would love for this blog to be a place people come for inspiration and a few helpful tips. However, I know a lot of friends who look at this blog are already talented and successful freelance graphic designers and don't really need my advice. For this reason I have been extremely intimidated and too scared to share my knowledge. But, the other day I got a call from a friend asking for some advice on how much she should charge and how should she explain her prices to her client? It reminded me that we all had to start somewhere. Any advice or encouragement we could get from a friend meant the world. So I am attempting to write a regular post on this here blog enlightening anyone who shall inquire about my tricks of the trade. If you are one of those gifted and talented friends I mentioned above PLEASE offer any of your own advice in the comment section! I would love it as I am sure so many others would as well.

Let me first preface these posts by telling you a little bit about how I got here - I graduated from college with a degree in fine art. I then went on to get another degree in graphic design. After graduating for the second time I got married and quickly moved to the north shore of Oahu. For those of you who have never lived in "the country" on a small island there isn't a lot going on as far as job opportunities go. So, I became a freelance graphic designer out of necessity. Not because it was something I necessarily wanted to do. No no no, I wanted to stay in Portland and work at a large company and get benefits and have someone tell me what to do all the time. It was (and sometimes still is) difficult to be my own boss, make sure everyone is happy with my services and work from home (this last one is the hardest). All of the things I have learned I have had to learn twice. Once in school and then once the hard way. So I am imparting any knowledge I can on to YOU in case YOU need it.

That brings us to next weeks "2 cent" question of the day! "How much should I charge for my services? and how do I explain my pricing standard to my client?" I will be specifically talking about the use of an invoice (your soon to be new best friend) and how to gauge how much you are really worth. Candy Apples

All of the candy apples I have been seeing on the internet lately have had me itching to make my own. We had friends over Saturday night to make candy apples and watch Poltergeist to get in the Halloween spirit. My sister let me watch Poltergeist one year when I was little. I couldn't sleep for months. To punish my sister for letting me watch the scary movie my parents made her take care of me at night when I woke up crying. The movie brought back very vivid memories of walking into her room almost every other night and cuddling up on the floor next to her bed with my blanky to go to sleep under her protection. That's also when I started making my small white fluffy dog named Jackie go into every room of the house before me so she would get snatched first and I could make a clean get away.

There is no one else I would rather do this whole pregnancy thing with. I love it and everything, but it is hard and it is so great to have someone to share every step of the way with me. We have been taking these birthing classes to help prepare us for the big day. We are really excited to make the experience something special and sacred for our family. Not scary or chaotic. Anyway, last night they showed a birth movie called "Saturday's Children" made in the 70's. It was totally crazy and had both of us in tears. Every time a woman in the movie had a baby we would cry. Every time. We are just over flowing with excitement to meet our little boy. We can't even stand it!

Conor's Mood Board

I spent this weekend acting like an absolute pregnant lunatic. I spent a lot of the time laying in bed convincing Conor to lay next to me and "talk" and if he didn't have a million things to say right away I would bombard him with questions. What is your favorite thing? What is your favorite thing about me? Do you like me? Do you think you are going to like our baby? Do you even want to go to school tomorrow? Don't you want to stay home with MEEEE???? Luckily I have a very patient husband who answers all of my questions (wether they be desperate, trivial, or just idiotic) with the sweetest of answers. "My favorite thing is stew with meat and potatoes.. I like that you are so funny... Of course, I love you... I can't wait for baby... Well, I do need to go to school tomorrow... Sweetie, you know I can't do that..." And then usually about 10 minutes later a new barrage of questioning begins (usually the questions are only slight variations of the ones before). How he stays cool and manages to say all the right things (most of the time) is beyond me. I would have kicked me to the curb a long time ago. But, I am actually pretty funny so I can see why he hasn't and stuff.

Dinner Date

Friday night Conor took me on a date. We picked up our favorite Thai food and ate it on the beach. We ate dinner pretty early (I can't wait till 6 like a normal person) so we were home and done with our date by 6:30. At that point I washed my faced, brushed my teeth and got in bed. Yes, 6:30 on a Friday night. And I don't even care.

On a more adventurous note - we did go out Saturday night with friends to see the new movie Contagion. Conor and I have a little obsession with the Center for Disease Control and curing the world of epidemics (see board game in this post here). Saving the world from terrible viruses is our favorite past time. Yeah, we are big nerds. We were so excited about this movie and were even tempted to go dressed as a medic and a scientist. However, we did go in normal clothes... and about halfway through the movie Conor leaned over to me and whispered, "I either have a sock or a dryer sheet down my pants.... (reached deep into his pants, struggled for a moment)... no, it's UNDERWEAR!" and the underwear went quickly into my purse with all of my snacks. Lovely. Hope you had a lovely weekend too!

Baby Boy (31 weeks)

Conor was in a bit of an altercation this week with an angry Samoan man who threatened to punch him in the face. And no, Conor didn't deserve it, he simply asked the man a question. I guess at 8 months pregnant I am a bit mouthy and supposedly told the man what I thought of his threats and where he could go with them. I say, "I guess" because about 10 minutes later I had forgotten that I said anything at all and was talking about the situation as if I was just a mere witness. That is until my friends reminded me that I had a few very loud things to say to the man. This made me laugh hysterically. 8 months pregnant = mouthy + forgetful! Not a good combo. And Conor wants me to include this last picture because he likes it. I guess it is proof that I still have ankles - something I certainly do not have every night when I go to bed.

Watch'ya Whippin' Up?

Hello everyone. For the last few weeks now I have been having friends over every Wednesday night to whip something up. Last week we had a sad sad Wednesday night when our salted caramel bars failed miserably. I don't think we let the caramel cook all the way before we poured it. Some poor pregnant girl saw all that sweetened condensed milk and butter and wanted to rush through the cooking part and get to the eating part. (That girl may or may not be me). Tonight however, we are going for something a little healthier and a lot easier - my mom's blueberry muffins. If you feel like whipping something up tonight here you go:

Beat together:

1 egg

1/4 cup oil

1/2 cup milk

Then add the following:

1/2 cup sugar

1 1/2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup fresh or frozen bluberries (fold blueberries in last)

Sugar the tops of muffins before baking

Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes

Makes about 10-12 muffins

My dear friend Caitlin is turning 23 today! To celebrate this weekend we hung out by the pool at Turtle Bay resort while our husbands surfed. Her husband now officially has the nickname Scar because he seriously almost lost his eye while out in the water - picture a long thin deep gash going from above the eye brow to below his cheek bone... just leaving the eye miraculously in tact (birthday miracle #1). Then we went out for pizza on the beach and watched the sun go down. It was perfect. Happy Birthday Caitlin! Your friendship means a lot to me and I am so glad to have you in my life!

Q&A. Why are there so many creative Mormon bloggers?

I, along with a few other Mormon bloggers recently received an email from a theology student wondering if I could shed any light on why there are so many creative Mormon bloggers in the world.

You are all so creative, unique and inspiring. You are all doing really beautiful things in the world. In some ways, this is foreign to me as an Evangelical Christian. Evangelical Christianity has, for so long, promoted "ministry" over say, a career in the arts. But somehow, this doesn't seem to be the case for most Mormons I've encountered on the blogosphere. So, what are your thoughts on the nature of the relationship between your faith and your church upbringing and the way you engage culture, the world, style, fashion, design, etc? Do you see a relationship between the two?

My Answer:

I have been thinking about it a lot and while I am not an expert on this subject here are some of my thoughts/opinions about Mormon's and blogging.

I went to school at BYU-Hawaii. I majored in Fine Art with an emphasis in sculpture and ceramics. Graduating from an LDS college means that you typically have one of our church leaders speak at your commencement ceremony. I remember the speaker Elder M. Russell Ballard delivering our address and the topic being highly focused on media and the internet - specifically social networking.

“I ask that you join the conversation by participating on the Internet to share the gospel and to explain in simple and clear terms the message of the Restoration,” You can read the rest HERE.

After graduating in 2007/2008 I didn't have a clear career path laid out in front of me and I did not have a family of my own or any other obligations. I was a bit lost, but with the encouragement of my parents I decided to continue my education. Pursuing as much education as possible is also highly regarded in the Mormon church. I was accepted to in to a design program in Portland and fell in love with graphic design. I started a blog to show others what I was working on while in design school. Elder Ballard's words never really left me and I felt that it was my obligation and duty to represent myself on the internet as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ. I am not perfect but I try not to promote anything that would be contrary to my religious beliefs. I do try to promote things that are inspiring, uplifting and worth while.

In another talk addressed to members of the church the same apostle said, "Because of its sheer size, media today presents vast and sharply contrasting options. Opposite from its harmful and permissive side, media offers much that is positive and productive. Television offers history channels, discovery channels, education channels. One can still find movies and TV comedies and dramas that entertain and uplift and accurately depict the consequences of right and wrong. The Internet can be a fabulous tool of information and communication, and there is an unlimited supply of good music in the world. Thus our biggest challenge is to choose wisely what we listen to and what we watch."

I believe this to be true. The world can and does use media in a very harmful, degrading way. We are torn down by a lot of content that is circulated on the internet and on television. Our minds can be filled with negativity and filth. On the other hand I believe these tools can be used for so much good. We can learn so much, reach out to people we could never have reached otherwise, and share all of the good things that we personally are creating or doing. I believe a lot of Mormon's approach their blogs with this same belief. We can either be part of the problem or part of the solution.

To put it very simply- I think Mormon's believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ has brought comfort in times of unrest and answers when feeling utterly lost. We feel that if we can share that with others using social networks we are doing something good. We are also a group of people who have been encouraged to educate and uplift our minds for our entire lives. The two just happen to compliment each other really well when put into a blog.

...not really. There is not a story. I just thought these photo booth pictures looked very Brady Bunch. So, no story here. Just a girl who says all the wrong things at exactly the right time and a boy who does more dance moves in one day than he takes normal steps. Seriously, I think I get told that I am the most awkward person upon first meeting someone than anyone else in the world. And, my husband, well, he just hums and does a silly little dance and everyone adores him. Weird. Have a good weekend folks. We are pouring ourselves into some work this afternoon so we can enjoy this hot hot heat.

In the mood for... Fading Summer

A lot of you are saying goodbye to summer, lucky for me I don't have to for at least another year. I love when summer comes to an end in the clothing world because everything "summer" goes on sale and oh, look at that... I still get to revel in tank top glory and shorty short madness. (Don't be too fooled by my excitement, I do miss sweaters and boots and scarves... and I occasionally try to force the style in 80 degree weather, but it is never a very good idea.) So for now I am loving that summer fade.

2. Wee Wedding Cake recipe illustrations, via Once Wed. These make me want to bake all day long.

3. My new mommy bag from Urban Outfitters. Who said a diaper bag has to be 50 times bigger than a regular purse and decked out with green and brown polka dots?

4. Saw this chicken wire inspiration board over at SeeSaw Design Studio blog and am just about to go out at get my own! Easy, affordable and it looks great.

Baby Mobile

We set up our crib this morning and I made this little mobile to hang above baby's head. Believe it or not but our nursery/office/bedroom isn't all that crowded. Bits of our Weekend

We had a lovely weekend away from home. We stayed at the Makaha Resort for our one year anniversary on the east side of the island. It was relaxing and quiet. I even got a pre-natal massage at the spa while we were there. It was heaven. We came home and made breakfast for dinner with friends and jetted around to different beaches for some sun. I know most of you are gearing up for fall/autumn and I am jealous of all those fall sweaters and crispy orange leaves. Here however, we will continue to enjoy our endless summer.

Dearest Conor, This year has been amazing. Thank you for everything and for being my best friend.September- We got married in the Portland Oregon Temple and started our lifelong journey together. We were sealed for time and all eternity in a small ceremony in front of our closest friends and family. The day was beautiful and memorable and everything we had hoped it would be. We enjoyed a simple honeymoon in Palm Springs and then quickly moved to Hawaii where we set up our first home together. I have the fondest memories of that month and sometimes wish I could relive it again and again.October- We started to make friends - good friends. It was exciting. For Halloween I cut my bangs way too short so I could be Audrey Hepburn and you were Buddy Holly. We surfed and ate a lot. We also started to show each other our true colors, which only made us fall more in love. November- November was exciting. I think we finally felt like we belonged in Hawaii and we were pretty comfortable living together. Thanksgiving was a treat! I loved getting into the holidays with you, you know it is my favorite time of year.December- Oh, our first Christmas together! SO much fun! I can't tell you how many times I imagined waking up next to my best friend on Christmas morning, making a yummy breakfast and opening gifts. I finally got what I always wanted!January- We spent a lot of time with friends and at the beach. I started a new job and you got in to another semester of school. We started talking about starting a family - it was scary but the best kind of scary. We also spent a lot of time hulled up in our room watching episodes of Prison Break. January was a good month. February- I jetted off to Las Vegas for work and left you for the first time since we had been married. We celebrated Valentines Day with friends, and I turned 26 years old! You organized a surprise party which I found out about before hand so we had to hide in our closet and surprise our guests instead. March- We survived the great Tsunami that was so devastating in Japan. We packed up our home and stayed in the hills all night waiting for disaster to strike. Luckily it didn't. You were so calm and made me feel safe. Not long after that we found out I was pregnant. That's when I sort of checked out for the next two months. April- April was difficult. I think I spent most of it in bed with you bringing me crackers and over the toilet while you held my hair back. I don't know how we managed to get that photo above. I was sick. Sicker than sick. I still remember paddling out and thinking, "what in the world am I doing in a dress on a surf board... and why is my husband catching every wave in this entire ocean?? I should be in bed or puking or something..." I watched more Law and Order in April than a lot of other people could watch in a lifetime. May- May was yet another difficult month. You handled it like a pro. Some of our good friends moved away and my grandma passed away. I was still very sick and spending lots of time in bed. I don't know how you managed to keep me so happy and content and the house so clean and still get all of your school work done. You are amazing. I can't thank you enough. June- We headed off the island for weddings and family time. Spending time at Bear Lake in your grandma's old home, eating milk shakes everyday and swinging on the big swing was the best way to recover from months of feeling like crap. Flying standby was a joke and we learned never to do that again. California was so much fun, I always feel at home when we are visiting your family.

July- We celebrated the 4th of July (still stuck in California). My tummy started to get bigger and we found out we were having a boy. You turned 25 years old and we spent the day in Waikiki surfing and eating. I officially got my appetite back and we went on some fun dates. August- We went on some fun picnics and made lots of dinners together. I left for about two weeks to visit my family and shop for baby things on the mainland. I couldn't believe how much I missed you. I didn't expect to get all sappy and run into your arms crying when I saw you at the airport. But Conor, you are just that great... I don't know why I don't do it every time I see you! We will be celebrating our first year of marriage tomorrow and I can't wait for our fun little get away that you have planned. You are my best friend and I love you. Thank you for the best year of my life.

Baby Quilt

I finished the quilt I was making for baby boy. I love the little illustration of the boy fishing. I think it is the cutest thing ever. Can't wait to wrap my little guy up in this and tell him how much we love him. Tomorrow we get to go to the Doctor's office for a few hours to get a glucose check. Just a few hard pokes from a needle and it's over right? And I am hoping to get another good look at this little boy, that always makes me smile.

Our weekend (28 weeks)

Long weekend filled with work, long naps and lots of episodes of 24 (yeah, I know I'm a little late on that bandwagon - but boy is it good!). We ordered pizza from the Impossibles Pizza Truck at Sharks Cove with some really good friends and ate till our tummies couldn't hold another bite. Mine in particular was rather FULL! Not much room left in there. A little less than three months now and we will have a little human to take care of.

Home Again

I'm back on that island. The one I sometimes call home. With that guy that I sometimes call my husband. I didn't realize how much I missed him until I saw him standing at the bottom of the escalator waiting for me at the airport. I burst into tears and couldn't help but run to him and throw my arms around his neck (I was shocked at my own theatrics but I am pregnant after all).

It is always nice to go away and come back again. Especially when it is between the two places you find yourself the most at home... I couldn't really tell which way was coming and which way was going. I will miss Portland, and my cute parents and my sister's crazy funny family. I have so many wonderful memories there. And I can add some new ones to the mix - like my parents making me laugh so hard I cried/couldn't breath/had to pee all at the same time and my dad's face as he practically scooped me up and carried me to the bathroom because he could not have handled it if I peed on the couch.

But, then there's always Hawaii and this guy I've been living with for the past year. We have made a new little home here together and we can't wait to add a third party to the mix. I think it's going to be fantastic.

Portland Things

A friend that I used to work with at Anthropologie recently designed the new Portland Collection for Pendeleton Woolen Mills. It will be sold in Anthropologie and other boutique stores in the Portland area. I think she is awesome and I think the work her and her two partners put into this collection is awesome! While shopping on NE Alberta St. I stumbled upon a brand new ice cream shop. New to me and completely new to Portland. They have unique flavors and the shop itself is adorable. My mom bee lined it straight to the counter and ordered "the bacon"... She is hilarious that way - she even owns bacon flavored floss (ugh!). The owner of the place was so friendly and so excited that I was having a baby. She did however question my decision to sew a quilt for the little chick nug. Also on NE Alberta St. there is a wonderful little fabric store that has the cutest crap you can imagine! I immediately fell in love with this Birch Storyboek collection and couldn't leave the store with out it. Tugwell is getting a quilt which I worked on all last night while watching Project Runway. I love it so much I will probably finish it before the weekend ends!

Tasty N Sons

And last but not least: a new restaurant to try. I guess it is all the rage right now in Portland. I have been wanting to eat breakfast out with the parents while I'm home but we haven't been able to decide on a place. Portland is so full of awesome places to eat. I think I will try to persuade them to Tasty N Sons. It sounds amazing.

I love so much coming home after I have been gone for so long, it makes me appreciate all of the things that I took for granted when I lived here. Portland is beautiful. I hope someday we can live here again.

There is absolutely no denying that this is exactly what I asked for. Becoming a mom. Having a baby. It's all I've wanted for some time now... and it's finally happening. The thing is there have definitely been times in the past few months when I have questioned this decision and been frustrated with my circumstances. There's the being really sick in the first few months, and the crazy hormones surging through my body, and the weight gain (which my husband so lovingly reassures me is beautiful) and all of those things that you plan for. But, I have had other frustrations and set backs that I didn't foresee.

In all of my planning I didn't see one of the biggest trials ahead. I'm a worker. I chose to go back to school and get a degree in graphic design specifically so I could continue to work after having children. Don't get me wrong, I'm still working now, but I have had a few interviews with perspective clients that have treated me rather unfairly as soon as they realized I was expecting. They didn't think I would be reliable, they suspected that when they would need me the most I would be unavailable.... I don't know exactly what they thought but it sucked. It made me feel worthless. I wanted to grab these people by the shoulders and shake them. I wanted to tell them I had so much to offer. The world of freelance is a tricky one to navigate. Throw in having a baby and that world just gets trickier. Luckily I have been able to pick up a few clients here and there that trust me and love my style. I have also been able to be a part of inspiring projects that keep me motivated and learning. But my working girl nature has been disappointed in the missed opportunities and the stark realization that I just simply cannot be the best mother I want to be and work 24/7. I just can't.

While venting this frustration to my own mother the other day she lovingly reminded me that I was the best thing she ever did in her whole life. I like to think that my mother is pretty successful, but I know that she always put her kids over her career. She also reminded me, "Honey, you CAN NOT sit there and say this isn't exactly what you wanted." She knows me well. It's funny because not long after that conversation I stumbled upon these pictures and I just had to laugh. I thought to myself, "Hey! She's right! I did want this! I wanted this really bad!" When I didn't have it, I would have given up anything to have it. And you know what? I can't wait to hold this little baby in my arms and tell him that I wanted this. I really did. Everyday, for the rest of my life I want him. No matter what opportunities I have to give up along the way, I want this opportunity more. And I will love it.

Our Weekending

This weekend was beautiful. We spent the day collecting driftwood at the beach for our shop. We swam a bit and my skin got a little crisp in the sun. We decided to pack up some of our favorite food and some sparkling cider and ride our bikes to a field near a stream and have a picnic. It was so nice to get away from everything and just spend the evening as just the two of us. We talked about how soon there will be another little person tagging along everywhere we go. We both wished he was already here.

P.S. Parenthood is making us soft. We watched 9 Months as we lay in bed falling asleep the other night. It stars Hugh Grant and Julianne Moore and is a completely ridiculous comedy, but during the end scene where she actually has the baby we were in tears. We were so happy for them. Yes, Robin Williams is the doctor, Joan Cusack is going nuts, and Tom Arnold is being a complete idiot throughout the whole thing but it some how still made us cry. Yes, BOTH of us.

Green Tea Ice Cream: This week I am two things. #1. HOT #2. HUNGRY - I can't get enough ice cream, sorbet, popsicles... anything cold and flavorful will do me right. Just right. While I was doing a study abroad in Japan a few years ago I really pigged out on green tea ice cream until I couldn't eat it anymore. But lately I have been craving it like crazy.

Colorful Masking Tape: I picked up some rolls of fun tape a few weeks ago and have been going crazy with it on everything. It can make the dullest envelope come to life.

Being In the Kitchen: I have said it before and I will say it again, "I LIVE TO EAT and not the other way around." I love cooking and eating. Love it. I also like it when my kitchen looks neat and beautiful while I'm doing either of those activities.

A Friend of Mine Design: I recently discovered the work of this "holistic design practice". It is run by one woman who calls on the skills and talents of her friends from time to time. I think everything they make is beautiful.

Baby Boys: Yeah, I have one of those on the way. Can't wait to climb trees, play catch, teach him to swim, and talk about silly things. Found this photo on Pinterest and don't know who to credit, but it is pure joy.

Rustic DIY Shelves: What a great idea!? And how easy would this be to put together!? Love it.

This Ring: I don't think I even need to say anything.

Mango, Avacado, Black Bean and Lime Salad: Back to the eating and the cooking thing. This recipe will be made tonight (right after we go to the beach and right before we go see Captain America)! Perhaps I will let you know how it goes.

Skirts, Skirts and more Skirts: Remember how I said I was hot? And then I mentioned I have been eating a lot? and I also have that little one on the way? Right. Well, long skirts with elastic waist bands are my only hope these days. This outfit looks comfy and fashionable. Hard to find when you are gaining the .lbs daily.

Our pregnant weekend (25 weeks)

Pregnancy. Oh so much to say... so little time.

I feel this little guy kicking a lot these days. Sometimes I know he is sleeping. Sometimes I know he is wide awake and throwing himself a party in there.

My clothes don't fit me anymore. The few things I owned with an elastic waist band are all I can wear these days. Good thing I am going to Portland soon and can go maternity shopping with my mom and sister.

Last night we went to a friends house to watch The Men Tell All (you know, the Bachelorette?) Conor and I love to hate it and hate to love it. Anyway, my 9 month pregnant friend was having contractions 10 minutes apart when we got to her house. Towards the end of the show she quietly admitted that they were 3 minutes apart. She went to the hospital and had her baby 45 minutes later. She was in labor the whole time but just couldn't miss The Men Tell All. That was the best part of my weekend.

I don't know why I put Conor and myself through the hell of taking these tummy shots. We both hate doing it. The photo on the left is more or less the image I am going for. The photo on the right is what ends up happening 99.9% of the time because Conor is constantly looking at me with this look that says, "Are you freaking kidding me?" I guess I am just not one of those bloggers whose husband follows her around with a camera and takes awesome pictures of her everyday in a cute new outfit. It's really too bad. Neither one of us can keep a straight face for more than 2 seconds.

I have been meaning to blog about this for sometime and just haven't gotten around to it. I'm proud to say that the website I was putting together for some lovely sisters has been up and running for a few months now. Kendra and Krista contacted me with the idea of starting a wedding blog that focuses on modern style and high fashion. They had a really good idea of the direction they wanted to go in, so it was a dream to put this together for them. Along with customizing their wordpress blog, I also created their brand identity and collateral. Check out their site here to get some wedding inspiration.

Also, check out some of the other new projects I have up in my design portfolio. Ever since I got into my second trimester I feel like I have more energy than I know what to do with! It has been great. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I have a little bit of free time on my hands lately. Hence all of the pictures of our house. Our CLEAN house. We basically live in a glorified dorm room, but we have tried to make it our own.

It has been rainy and cold here lately. I told Conor it feels like we need a fire place. We live in Hawaii and I do believe it is the middle of summer. What gives? I decided to make us a bright summery treat to warm our damp souls. Strawberry lemonade bars. Make them! They are good.

Weekend, Date Night, Purple Sky

I planned a surprise date night for Conor... but I am terrible at directions so I had to tell him where we were going so he could look it up on a map and drive us there. I also couldn't find a theater playing the movie we wanted to see so I had to tell him about that part too. He figured that out as well. We got some ice cream at a place called Bubbies in Honolulu. It is clearly a family place with little kids running around everywhere, but all of the desserts had very sexually explicit names. I ordered Our First Night because it sounded good, but also because it was the only thing I could have ordered without turning red and giggling like a little kid. We then saw Larry Crown, which in my opinion was not that great. Since when did Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks decide to make sucky movies? Oh well, at least my ice cream cake was pervertedly delicious.

For Conor's birthday we spent the day in Waikiki. He surfed and I swam with some weird old man with a plastic bag on his hand. And no, he did not have a cast under it like you might think. Just a bag on his hand... Then we had cheesecake factory on the beach. It was a beautiful and delicious day.

25 years ago today my favorite person was born! And of course on his big day he wants to surf, so we are packing up some stuff and heading down to the south shore to catch the only waves there are right now. The north shore is flat as a pancake. We will grab some lunch and then head home for a little get together with friends. I have been looking forward to this day for weeks!

1. Anything I can make and do for baby. This is a great tutorial for a little boy onesie.

2. Ever since my appetite came back I have been a cooking monster. Gojee is a new cool website that allows you to type in stuff you have on hand and then generates awesome recipes for you to make. Last night Gojee told us to make brown butter gnocchi with sage and walnuts. And we did. And it took us 3 hours. But is was YUM.

3. I will wear whatever J.Crew tells me to. Red sweater with red shorts? You might think that is a bad idea. J.Crew thinks it's cool so I do too. Wishing they had a maternity line for people with no money. HA.

4. We recently received our printed copy of Kinfolk in the mail. It was a dream to look at. So happy to be part of this fun project. You can view it online tomorrow!

5. On our recent trip to California I think we went to Ikea more than we went anywhere else. I forgot how awesome that store is! We don't have one in Hawaii so we found some great stuff for baby to ship over here.

6. Conor's birthday is on Monday. I got him Pandemic which we have already opened and played several times. It is the most fun board game I have played in a while. Wish these guys were around to play it with. They would LOVE it.

7. These little pants for boys are so cute. I have been scouring the internet for cute little boy ideas. And I love when I find other young mommy blogs that have recently had or are pregnant with cute little baby boys. You can find those cute baby leggings at Thief and Bandit on Etsy.

He's a boy! (20 weeks)

Up until the last three weeks I have been thinking this little Chick Nug was a girl. Then one day I woke up and had a realization that this wasn't no girl. This was a boy. And boy oh boy was I excited. Everyone always asks, "So, what do you want it to be?" I guess I sort of wanted it to be a girl. I don't know why. Maybe because I am one? I thought that would be easier to deal with for my first time around? But once I got to see this little guy move around and do his tricks I knew he was the right baby for me. I am in love. Our little guy is already finding ways of entertaining us while in the womb. While watching him on the monitor he rolled, kicked, smacked his lips and then wound up and punched himself in the face. It was hilarious. I couldn't stop smiling and laughing the whole time we were looking at him. HIM! I love that I can say "him" instead of "it". So now the new question everyone is always asking is, "So, do you have any names picked out yet?" And we do. We have a couple that we absolutely full heartedly love and agree on. But, we are going to let this little guy come into the world before we pin any name on him. Right now we lovingly refer to him as Baby or Chicken Nugget... or Tugwell. Don't ask where Tugwell came from. It's just a funny name for that funny valentine in my tummy.
OH AND!! Looks like our due date is sooner than we thought! Nov. 23. Yes! That shaved a whole week off! I wish it were tomorrow!

Our 4th was great. We went to the beach, had breakfast burritos, fajitas and candy all day long. Watched fire works with family and played games. California was good to us. We are finally back in Hawaii and ready to dive back in to real life. Hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend!

And our vacation continues... whether we want it to or not. We just can't seem to get home. Flying standby to Hawaii in the middle of the summer is NEVER a good idea. I don't recommend it to anyone. We were fortunate enough to get ourselves all the way back down to San Diego to spend more time hanging out with Conor's parents and seeing more of our dear friends and family. The unfortunate part is that we had to miss our doctors appointment that would let us know the gender of this child. Oh well, all in due time, right? To pass some of the time here I have been finding little projects to work on to prepare for baby. This book (above) has some really cute and REALLY simple ideas for sewing. I am a big fan of Lotta. She can do no wrong. I am also finding that there are quite a few really cute things out there that are gender neutral. I think if Conor didn't want to know so bad right now I could probably go my whole pregnancy without finding out.

Bear Lake

Conor and I have been on vacation for almost a month now. We have been all over the place and seen lots of friends and family. We also spent a few days at Bear Lake in Utah sort of isolated from the world. It was nice to just relax and spend some quality time with my sister, her family and my parents. We had milk shakes and swung and the big "fwing" (that's what Miles calls it) everyday. It was just really nice.

Kinfolk Magazine

I have been dying to blog about this for some time. I am excited to announce that the magazine project some friends and I have been working on for the past few months is going to launch soon! Kinfolk Magazine is just our creative way of encouraging people to spend more time together with friends and family sharing intimate meals and celebrating all of the little things that make life great. Memorial Day Weekend

This weekend was both good and bad. It started out great. Natalie and I took some engagement photos for a cute couple out here in Hawaii. Then, she led me straight into a surprise baby shower! Yes, I am a whole three months and I am already having baby showers. I guess I was really really surprised because everyone said I stood in the doorway with a confused look on my face for an uncomfortably loooong time. Thank you Paige and London!

Our weekend was calm and productive. However, my grandmother passed away Sunday night. We have known for a while that she was going to die soon and so we have been expecting it. My dad has been able to travel several times in the last month to spend time with her which is really great. She died peacefully in her sleep with family around her. I don't enjoy death at all but there is something so beautiful about the way our whole family was so sure that our grandfather was there to greet her on the other side with open arms. I truly believe families can be together forever.

Our memorial day was exactly what I needed. We spent time with close friends barbecuing on the beach. We got an old grill for free at a garage sale and Conor cleaned it up. He spent the whole time making everyone's food and made me remember again why I a married him (not that I forgot) but, he is just so thoughtful and kind to everyone. He goes out of his way to do nice things for others all the time. This may sound morbid but, I am so glad that he is the one that will be greeting me on the other side. Not for a long long time of course.

...and We're Expecting! (14 weeks)

The time has come to let the cat out of the bag. My little tummy is starting to show and I believe all of my close friends and family already know. So there it is. The REAL reason I haven't been feeling well or blogging or doing much of anything. I'm sure a lot of you already put two and two together but here it is officially. We are now three months along - due Nov 29th! At our appointment today we got to hear baby's heart beating loud and clear! I have been dying to hear that sound for... well, since the last time I heard it which was about a month ago. I just wish I could hear it everyday.

Conor has been great these last few months. Bringing me breakfast in bed, holding my hair back while I puke, packing me snacks when I leave the house so I don't get too hungry. Oh, did I forget to mention all of the grocery store runs, and the doing of dirty dishes and all of the preparing of meals that he did? How did I get so lucky to have someone so great? I seriously had NO IDEA how hard the first few months of pregnancy could be. I really thought it was going to be a walk in the park. I guess I have just never spent time with a pregnant person before because there were about a thousand things that I didn't even know were THINGS until now. Like how can you sleep soooo much and still feel soooo tired? HOW? And how can you be so happy and then all of the sudden start crying your eyes out like there is no tomorrow? HOW? Luckily, I feel like those days are slowly fading away. I'm still a bit tired but not all that sick. And my appetite is back. And I can stand looking at a computer screen again. And I am just so freaking excited to hold this little baby in my arms that I just can't sit still anymore! So.. I'm off.

PS I can't wait to see a lot of YOU (my dear friends and family) in about a week and a half! We are counting down the seconds!

I gave myself a blogging timeout, but I think I am ready to be part of this world again. To be honest I just wasn't feeling up to it. I really felt like I just needed to put my head down and work. Work and hang out by the pool at Turtle Bay while Conor surfed. I watched Conor surf a lot this month. And I ordered $20 burgers poolside while he did. Haha! I think it was just what I needed... Have you ever seen the movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back? Well, I haven't. I don't know how Stella got her groove back. But, this last month I definitely got mine back. I feel good again. I feel more like myself. And I am so excited for everything that is happening in my life right now!

Hello Old Friend!

Things are still crazy busy around here but I just wanted to drop a line (and a few photos) to prove that I am still alive and kicking. My mom was getting worried and requested more blogging. We are all moved into our new little apartment. We like to call it our hotel room. It is small and basic and we still have stuff in boxes all over the living room. Our bedroom window opens on to a playground so we hear children playing from morning till night. Living here is very cozy: meaning you can hear and smell and see EVERYTHING that everyone else is doing. And vice versa. Our dear friends Nate and Katie graduated last week and moved away. We were so sad to see them go. I cried. Before moving out here I was sooo scared that we wouldn't find any friends. I thought for sure I would be alone and lonely while Conor went to school everyday. But, I believe God puts certain people in your life for specific reasons. From day one I knew they were an answer to a very sincere prayer, a prayer that I would have good friends to love and love me back. They are amazing people and taught me and Conor so much. One of the most important things that we learned from them was thoughtfulness. Nate and Katie were constantly doing small kind things for us. Bringing us leftovers when they thought we might be hungry and too tired to cook, letting us know of job opportunities, sending us links to interesting articles or pictures, picking up some little craft item they thought we could use in a project we were working on... the list goes on. We were constantly amazed at the small thoughtful things they would do for us. It wasn't until later we realized that pretty much everyone else around us was also benefiting from their kindness in the same way. They all had the similar stories. We were baffled. Conor and I still ask ourselves how they managed to take such good care of us AND EVERYONE at the same time. Those two just have some really big hearts. We are going to miss them so much and can't wait to see what they do next! We love you guys!

Tuesday Track

I have been feeling a bit under the weather lately and have been focusing all of the little energy I have on keeping my head above water with all of my recent projects. So much to do. So little time. The bright side is that I love what I am doing.

A few weeks ago Conor and I were on a lousy movie rampage. I think we watched every stupid movie ever made. But, I found one of my new favorite songs on "The Romantics" soundtrack. Listen to the song, don't bother with the movie.

2. Fleetwood Mac, all day every day.

3. Michael Cera - Conor and I can't get enough of him. Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, Arrested Development, Juno...he is an awkward comedic genius.

4. Jonathan Canlas' film pictures of the Hoover Damn. Makes me think of the time my friend cut my pony tail off with a pocket knife and threw it off the side into the water below as we drove over... one crazy night.

5. Prince Kuhio - He is the reason for the season after all. We have a three day weekend in honor of his highness. I have been in the mood for this day for a long time.

6. Porcelain Anything. But mostly this porcelain Mason Jar with a candle in it. I think it would make anything look more romantic.

7. Cashew Nut Chicken - I have been craving cashew nut chicken almost daily. There is a great thai food place up the road we are going to later tonight that serves it with coconut rice! So good.

We are moving into our new apartment in less than a month. Anyone who has been to our current little home knows that this is both really awesome and really sad at the same time. Our house now is so cute, and well... I am sentimentally attached to it because it is our "first place" together. It is also sad because the location is great and we have EVERYTHING! (Out here in Hawaii "everything" includes: washer and dryer, oven, air-conditioning and a microwave. It is RARE to find a place with all of those things. I'm sure everyone on the continental united states is snickering a little at that. But, Hawaii plays by it's own set of rules and a microwave oven is a hot commodity around here.) Anyway, the awesome part is that we will be moving into a place that is literally half as expensive as our current place! Hello money saving! We will also be living closer to all of our friends, and as some one who works from home I am totally looking forward to a change of scene. Moving means decorating in a whole new way. Hence the photo compilation above.
